Don’t Drink Yourself Fat

Water

You may remember that a while back I embarked on a health journey to reduce the empty calories in my diet.  This included sugary drinks like juices and soda, in addition to alcoholic beverages. Now, The New York City Department of Health is launching their own anti sugary drink campaign, called “Pouring on the Pounds.”  Seeing as this is a subject that is near and dear to me, I quickly headed over to their website to check it out. Some of the information on the site is quite alarming: 1 sugar-sweetened soda contains more than twice the daily recommended maximum … Continue reading

Orange-veggie-mania

Knock knock. Who’s there? Banana. Banana who? Knock knock. Who’s there? Banana. Banana who? Knock knock. Who’s there? Orange. Orange who? Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? Does this joke bring back childhood memories? It does for me.  And I couldn’t help thinking about it today when I ate lunch, which was completely over-run by orange vegetables: carrots and orange bell peppers, served with hummus for dipping.  The other half of my lunch consisted of a lavash wrap with melty cheese and corn salsa. But back to orange foods – a quick Google search revealed the health benefits of … Continue reading

Pizza Overload Weekend

Pizza-salad

*First let me begin by saying that I’m thankful that Hurricane Irene didn’t cause too much trouble for us in NYC.  My thoughts and prayers are with those that were less fortunate. That being said, the weekend was filled with the hustle and bustle of storm preparation, a quick trip to the in-laws in CT, cookie baking and waaaaaay too much pizza.  If one can, in fact, could ever have too much pizza FRIDAY Friday morning and afternoon looked like most work days on the blog.  Strawberries, banana,  granola and yogurt for breakfast and a turkey sandwich with cheese, lettuce … Continue reading

Missing the Bubbly

Coke

Giving up my beloved Diet Coke has not been easy In fact, while I am loving the fact that I no longer feel addicted to Diet Coke, I can’t see myself staying away from it completely.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  I no longer plan on buying 12-packs or 2-liter bottles of the stuff to keep in my house.  But, I don’t believe that ordering an occasional Diet Coke in a restaurant or bar will be detrimental to my health.  But anyway, for now, it’s hands-off. The thing that I think I miss the most about Diet Coke is the … Continue reading

*VEGAN* Strawberry Tart

Tart-whole

I’m angry. I came up with a stellar recipe that I know you all will love. It is the perfect light summer dessert. Even meat-loving Husbands will love this healthy *VEGAN* dessert.  I should know. So, why am I angry? Because this is the picture that I have to showcase my Vegan Strawberry Tart. That doesn’t exactly say, “Make me now,” does it? I had big plans for photographing a beautiful slice of this tart in natural light the day after it was served, but unfortunately in my hurry to clean up the kitchen with guests in the house, I … Continue reading
