Fat Tuesday and Peanut Butter Woes
Every year I give up something for lent. Usually, that ‘something’ is diet soda, but seeing as how I’ve already minimized my consumption of artificial sweeteners, that didn’t really seem fair. I toyed around with a couple of ideas: desserts; coffee; seltzer water; frozen yogurt. In the end I decided to give up something that is going to take A LOT of WILL POWER. Peanut butter. Eeeeeep! And after posting what I was giving up on Facebook and receiving many suggestions for alternatives (like almond butter), I decided that I was not going to take the easy way out and … Continue reading
Ssssmoking Workout
My workout was sssssssss-moking this morning! Literally. The Starbucks below my gym had a fire this morning! This resulted in a very loud and annoying alarm sounding, followed by a herd of gym-goers exiting the building [note: do you see that some of the hard-core gym goers decided to continue working out...lol. I'm not quite there yet]. When I smelled a faint hint of smoke and heard the fire trucks coming I knew that it was going to be a while. Rather than wait for the fire to be cleared or drive home, as many people were opting to do, … Continue reading

Twenty Things and Cookies
Twenty interesting things about me: 1. I have 20/15 vision (I could be a fighter pilot)! 2. I was a Penn State Cheerleader in college, and yes, I can still do “flips”. 3. I thought I was allergic to bananas until last year. 4. I am allergic to benzyl peroxide – the active ingredient in some face cleansers (my face gets red and my eyes swell shut. It’s not pretty). 5. I’m a scientist. A neuroscientist. I study the brain and stuff. 6. Vanilla ice cream is my weakness. I always eat it out of a coffee mug. 7. I … Continue reading

Oatmeal Disaster Averted and Vegas
Given my recent review of Mickey D’s oatmeal failure and the shocking discovery that my own personal oatmeal choice is loaded with sodium, I decided to try something new this morning. I make my oatmeal at work, so when I saw these Irish quick-cook rolled oats, I decided to give them a try. A serving amounts to 1/2 C. of the dry stuff, and makes a giant bowl of oatmeal! Much larger than my Quaker Instant Oats. I just loved the nutty taste of flax seeds and thought the texture would be a nice addition to my oats. Of course, … Continue reading
Easy Pesto You Can Freeze
The Hubs and I have some furniture moving to do tonight. Given how much snow we’ve had in NYC, its not surprising that our gutters froze, causing a leak in our bedroom. The landlord is coming tomorrow to repair the whole back wall of our bedroom, so we need to move our furniture, pack up our picture frames and move the mattress out of the room (in case there is dust or, God forbid, mold in the wall when it comes down). Given the task at hand, tonight was another easy semi-leftover dinner. We had turkey and provolone sandwiches on … Continue reading

Peanut Butter Trio
That people, is a gift from the Gods, otherwise known as my Mother I arrived home the other day to the most glorious care package in the world. A trio of natural peanut butters (smooth operator (plain), cinnamon raisin swirl and dark chocolate dreams) and a jar of strawberry jam from Peanut Butter & Company. The peanut butter devil has already perched himself on my left shoulder and is whispering “go get a spoon” in my ear. I may have “sampled” the dark chocolate dreams-under said devil’s influence-of course It tastes exactly like a Reese’s peanut butter cup. Help! … Continue reading
