Feeling better
As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve been feeling a little under the weather. I don’t know if I was actually sick or if I simply had post-vacation blues, but I took the day off from the gym to nab a little extra shut-eye. I’m feeling much better now. Revived! Breakfast this morning was a big bowl of fresh strawberries (1.5 C serving fruit) with yogurt and raw oats. If you haven’t tried raw oats as a topping, you really should. Their flavor is hard to explain, but is slightly doughy. Almost like a raw cookie dough – and who doesn’t like … Continue reading
Sleep Like A Baby Complete
After a good-night’s rest this I evening I will have completed my fourth Shabbott’s Habit: Sleep Like a Baby. With Sleep Like a Baby, my goal was to get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night for 28 nights straight. I also set out to be more mindful of my sleep habits, like eliminating caffeine before bed and minimizing noise (hello, earplugs). Looking back on the past 28 days, I must admit that making the time to get the proper amount of sleep has been difficult. For me, that fact alone has really put in to perspective how … Continue reading
Sesame Asparagus
I whipped up this sesame asparagus tonight for a quick and healthy side dish. Some people don’t realize how easy it is to transform vegetables with a few simple ingredients. I used brown sugar in this dish to balance out the salty flavor of the soy sauce and added sesame seeds for richness and crunch. You won’t be disappointed by how simple and tasty this is. RECIPE: SESAME ASPARAGUS Ingredients: 1 lb. Asparagus spears, bottoms trimmed off 2 Tbsp. sesame seeds 3 Tbsp. Soy sauce 1 Tbsp. Brown sugar (or sub honey) 1/2 Tbsp. Sesame oil Pinch of red pepper … Continue reading

Good News and Bad News
THE GOOD NEWS – Today I start my new Shabbott’s Habit: Sleep Like a Baby. I’m really excited for this one. I know that I NEED more sleep. I usually get about 5.5 – 6.5 hours of sleep each night during the week. Now, I’m making a solid effort to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. My goal is to be getting ready for bed by 10-10:15 pm at the latest, so that I can be asleep by 10:30 pm. I wake up at 5:30 am, so that gives me 7 glorious hours of sleep minimum. That also means … Continue reading
Sleepy Monday
Is anyone else extra tired this Monday? I blame it on the time change – although I do love the fact that when I leave work there is still sunlight! I can already feel those winter blues starting to melt away. This morning I ran 3 miles at the gym and also did about about 15 minutes of cardio on the ellipse. I’m trying to run more consistently (~4 times a week) to get ready for the Fairfield half marathon in June. I’m also looking for another half marathon in May (anyone have any ideas?). Once I have my race … Continue reading

When To Just Sleep
I teach an after-school science program at a NYC middle school on Friday afternoons. Every Thursday evening, I collect my supplies for the class and test the experiment or activity that I’ll be doing with the kids the next day. Unfortunately, last night’s demonstration test went horribly wrong (I still can’t figure out why) and I ended up repeating the whole thing over. This led to my going to bed very late, which had me contemplating whether to go to the gym in the morning or not. So, morning gym-goers…when is it a good idea to skip the morning workout … Continue reading
