*VEGAN* Strawberry Tart

Tart-whole

I’m angry. I came up with a stellar recipe that I know you all will love. It is the perfect light summer dessert. Even meat-loving Husbands will love this healthy *VEGAN* dessert.  I should know. So, why am I angry? Because this is the picture that I have to showcase my Vegan Strawberry Tart. That doesn’t exactly say, “Make me now,” does it? I had big plans for photographing a beautiful slice of this tart in natural light the day after it was served, but unfortunately in my hurry to clean up the kitchen with guests in the house, I … Continue reading

Pretzel Fail

Pretzels.  Salt-kissed, doughy twists of goodness. The perfect mall-time snack.  Fuel for future shopping.  Or are they? After dealing with a leak in our apartment that has now left us with a giant hole in our ceiling, the Hubs and I had to run to the mall for some errands.  We hadn’t eaten dinner and although the Cheesecake Factory was taunting us, we decided that we would wait until we got home to cook something.  I suggested that we grab a pretzel to hold us over.  The Hubs wanted pepperoni, so we decided to ‘split’ one since it was just … Continue reading

Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables

Strawberries-cream-oatmeal

Okay people. Time for a new Shabbott’s Habit!!! Today I start “Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables” an initiative to get the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables each and every day. Now, I don’t know about you, but I grew up using the good old-fashioned food pyramid (did I just make a reference to myself being old-fashioned? gag).  According to that categorical description, one should consume 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruit each day. However, in doing more research, I also stumbled onto the new food guide pyramid.  Did anyone else find this confusing? Me too, … Continue reading

A-Maoz-ing

Vegetarian falafel joint with all you can eat fixings salad bar?  Yes please. Tonight I met my friend, Anna, on the Upper West Side for some falafel at Maoz.  I love that they say “Meat eaters welcome.” While the place is small and reminds me of Middle-Eastern fast food, I’m not about to pass up lots of spicy, marinated veggies.  Maoz is white, clean, fast, cheap and tasty.  Why argue?  We each had the salad box, which featured 4 tasty falafel balls on top of romaine lettuce.  The falafel was crispy and flavorful.  I got the hummus add-on and headed … Continue reading

Saturday Breakfast Smoothies

Strawberry-Banana-Protein-Smoothie

SMOOTHIES!!! Two weekends ago we went to Smoothie King for a special breakfast treat, so this weekend we decided to recreate our favorite smoothies at home.  This was such a surprisingly easy recipe that ended up being absolutely delicious.  In fact, the Hubs said that he could drink this every morning for breakfast!  I decided to try making a classic strawberry/banana smoothie and added a little vanilla protein powder for some extra nutritional punch. RECIPE: STRAWBERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE Makes 1 large serving Ingredients: 1 C. Frozen strawberries 1 Medium frozen banana 1 Tbsp. Vanilla protein powder 3/4 – 1 C. … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Recipe

Finished

Chocolate-covered strawberries are a Valentine’s Day staple.  However, I wanted to do something a little bit different this time around. So, without further delay, my new strawberry creation. RECIPE: BLACK AND WHITE STUFFED STRAWBERRIES Ingredients: 2 lb Strawberries, hulled 4 oz Neufchatel cheese (cream cheese would work as well) 1 1/2 C Powdered sugar 1/2 C Marshmallow fluff 1/3 C Nutella 1/2 Tsp Vanilla Extract Directions: 1.  Hull the strawberries.  I find it easiest to hold a knife at an angle and slowly rotate the strawberry just around the edge of the stem.  You should be able to remove a … Continue reading
